The largest U.S. exhibition to date of Vietnamese ceramics will open in January at the Birmingham Museum of Art, revealing another strength of our outstanding collection, and showing to the public for the first time, one of the top three finest collections of such wares in North America.
Dragons and Lotus Blossoms: Vietnamese Ceramics from the Birmingham Museum of Art is the first major exhibition of Vietnamese pottery in the United States. The exhibition is co-curated by Dr. Donald A. Wood, the BMA?s Curator of Asian Art, and John Stevenson, one of the preeminent experts in the field. The exhibition, in the Museum?s Jemison Galleries, will be on display January 22 through April 8, 2012. The exhibition is free, and open to the public.
?This is an opportunity to discover beautiful works of art that are rarely seen in the U.S.,? Wood said. ?It is also an opportunity to explore the rich history of a country that not only played an important role in the recent history of the U.S., but also is a vital part of our future.?
Through judicious purchases and generous donations, the BMA has acquired over several decades, one of the finest collections of Vietnamese ceramics, keeping company with the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
The entire BMA collection --more than 200 pieces of Vietnamese ceramics -- will be on display. The collection is fully illustrated in the accompanying catalogue, which features important essays by Stevenson, Wood, and Philippe Truong, an independent expert in Vietnamese ceramics. The catalogue is published and distributed by The University of Washington Press.
?There are very few publications in English about Vietnamese ceramics,? Wood said. ?This catalogue contains the most current scholarship on this topic by some of the most respected experts in this field.?
As the first large-scale exhibition of Vietnamese ceramics in America, ?It is also the first exhibition to explore the fascinating history and variety of Vietnamese wares in the U.S.,? Wood said.

The Genetic Disease Foundation (GDF), which raises funds to support research and education towards the prevention and treatment of genetic diseases, is pleased to announce that Eric Schadt, PhD, is now a member of its Medical & Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Schadt, known as a visionary in the use of computational biology in genomics, joined Mount Sinai School of Medicine in August 2011 as Chair of the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences and Director of the Institute for Genomics and Multi-scale Biology.
Dr. Schadt brings a bold new research approach, which is premised on studying multiple genes and biological processes through the use of advanced technology and computer models to develop a better understanding of disease causes and ultimately better diagnostics and treatment.
?We are extremely pleased and privileged to welcome a thought-leader like Dr. Schadt to our Advisory Board, where he will help guide the organization?s efforts,? said Elisa Ross, GDF President. ?It?s important that GDF stays at the very forefront of genomic medicine so that we can optimize use of funds and provide the most valuable information to others.?
An expert in computational mathematics and sequencing technology, Dr. Schadt?s research at companies including Merck & Co. and Roche Biosciences has helped revolutionize the integration of genetic and molecular profiling data to construct predictive models of disease that have led to a number of discoveries relating to causes of common diseases. He currently maintains his position as Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at Pacific Biosciences, a third generation DNA sequencing company, where he?s worked since 2009 overseeing the firm?s scientific strategy including creating the vision for next-generation sequencing applications of the company?s technology. Dr. Schadt is also a founding member of Sage Bionetworks, an open access genomics initiative designed to build and support databases and an accessible platform for creating innovative, dynamic disease models.
Two Prominent Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialists Also Join GDF Medical & Scientific Advisory Board
GDF is also pleased to announce the recent addition of two prominent Mount Sinai physicians to its Medical & Scientific Advisory Board: Keith A. Eddleman, MD, Director of Obstetrics and a Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences and of Genetics and Genomic Sciences; and Joanne Stone, MD, Director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Director of Perinatal Ultrasound and a Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences. Both Dr. Eddleman and Dr. Stone are nationally recognized for their expertise in chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and ultrasound and have published extensively on areas related to high-risk pregnancies in medical journals and other publications.
Dr. Stone has a consultative and clinical practice and is also active in clinical research and education. Her areas of interest include ultrasound, fetal therapy, multi-fetal pregnancy reduction and prenatal diagnosis.
